Five University of Lampung (Unila) teams won two gold and three silver medals at the 2022 International World Youth Invention and Innovation Award (WYIIA) competition organized by the Indonesian Young Scientist Association (IYSA), August 2022.
The five are students of the Department of History Education FKIP (4 teams) and the Department of Biology FMIPA (1 team). Four teams from the Department of History Education won WYIIA 2022 medals in the Education (gold), Social Science (two silver), and Technology (silver) categories. While the FMIPA team won gold in the Life Sciences category. Rachmat Nugraha Indra from the FMIPA team revealed that WYIIA 2022 is the first international competition that his team participated in. He and his team felt proud because his team's innovative product, Sprant (Spray for Ant), could compete with 254 teams from 26 countries and won gold.
Sprant is a bioinsecticide from laboratory research using the entomopathogenic fungus Aspergillus sp., which is taken from cockroaches. This bioinsecticide has been laboratory tested to have 97% effectiveness in killing black ants symbiotic with mealybugs with a density of 10'9 conidia / ml. This product is believed to have high potential to be developed in a wider scope by collaborating with various related partners so that it is expected to be useful for many people.
Rachmat hopes that the innovations produced by his team can inspire and motivate many people so that they find opportunities as well as excel in their respective fields of science in order to advance and make Unila proud. "Our next plan is to strive for research on this bioinsecticide product so that it can be continued until it reaches 99% effectiveness so that there is greater opportunity to cooperate with related partners," he said. World Youth Invention and Innovation Award is an event organized by the Indonesian Young Scientist Association (IYSA) in collaboration with Yogyakarta State University. This event aims to provide opportunities for them to showcase their works/projects, as well as improve the quality and types of projects that have contributed to the development of the world, develop the spirit of creativity in the international world, scientific research skills and the spirit of innovation, exchange experiences of innovation and discovery among students and students around the world.
